The new costume section includes an array of 1750–1995 wedding gowns, plus fashions from ‘The Party Afterwards’ including a Christian Dior dress worn by the British film star Olivia De Havilland (she of Gone with the Wind fame, 1939). A new room showcases a splendid fully furnished scale model of a Victorian town house.
The outbuildings now display a wide range of tools and implements used in domestic and working life in Guernsey at the turn of the century. There are crab pots, fish baskets, ormering hooks, a Victorian mangle used by children doing the washing, rabbit traps and pig-killing knives, milk cans and threshing tools, old-fashioned boneshakers and carts and carriages, all giving an insight into the varied diet and the never-ending pattern of work involved in rural life. There are even some renovated pig sties.
The last display is devoted to the once-flourishing tomato industry. Guernsey’s first glasshouses, built in 1792, were used for growing dessert grapes but became a source of huge wealth as tomatoes, introduced in 1865, took over. Until the 1960s the sweet, juicy and flavoursome Guernsey toms (along with Jersey Royal potatoes) were eagerly awaited by many people as early-season crops. In 1957 more than 9 million 12lb (5kg) trays of tomatoes were exported. But what was once a staple of English grocers was driven out of the market by Dutch imports, and today Guernsey toms are virtually unavailable off the island.
